Good News for Bangalore Passengers: One Smart Card for Both BMTC Bus and Namma Metro Travel

Bengaluru Travellers may soon experience a major improvement in public transportation convenience. The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is preparing to introduce a new smart ticketing system that will allow passengers to use a single card for both BMTC buses and Namma Metro services.

This initiative comes at a time when passenger traffic in BMTC buses has significantly increased. After the implementation of the Shakti scheme, more than 40 lakh passengers travel on BMTC buses every day. However, the surge in ridership has also exposed limitations in the current ticketing system, particularly due to outdated ticket machines used by conductors.

In many cases, the older machines struggle to handle the large number of passengers, which sometimes leads to delays and even disagreements between passengers and conductors while issuing tickets. To address these issues and modernize public transport services, the transport department is planning to introduce a cashless and digitally integrated ticketing system.

One Card for Bus and Metro Travel

Under the new system, passengers will be able to travel using the Namma Metro card or the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC). This means commuters will not have to carry multiple cards for different modes of transportation.

With the integration of these cards, passengers can simply tap or present their metro card to pay for bus tickets. This initiative aims to create a seamless mobility experience across Bengaluru’s public transport network, making daily travel faster and more convenient.

Introduction of Advanced ETM Machines

To support this new system, BMTC plans to introduce around 10,000 advanced Electronic Ticketing Machines (ETM) across its buses. These machines will replace older ticketing devices and enable conductors to process payments quickly and efficiently.

The project is estimated to cost around ₹40 crore, and the contract has been awarded to a Mumbai-based company called Chalo. Under the agreement, approximately 11,000 ETM machines will be supplied and maintained for five years.

These new machines will significantly improve ticketing operations and reduce the chances of errors or disputes during fare collection.

Multiple Digital Payment Options

One of the biggest advantages of the new ETM machines is the wide range of digital payment options available to passengers. Commuters will be able to pay their fares using:

  • UPI platforms such as Google Pay, PhonePe, and BHIM

  • Debit cards

  • Credit cards

  • Namma Metro cards

  • National Common Mobility Cards (NCMC)

  • Dynamic QR code payments

The inclusion of dynamic QR code technology ensures that each transaction is unique and secure, reducing the possibility of fraud or ticket manipulation.

Faster Ticket Processing

The upcoming ETM machines will be Android-based devices equipped with touch screens and faster processing systems. This will allow conductors to issue tickets much more quickly than before.

Faster ticket printing and digital payment processing will reduce waiting time for passengers, especially during peak travel hours. Additionally, the digital system will automatically record journey details such as travel distance, fare amount, and transaction data.

Gradual Rollout Across Bengaluru

BMTC officials have indicated that the new machines could begin appearing in buses within the coming months, with a phased rollout planned across the entire fleet.

Once fully implemented, the system is expected to transform the ticketing experience for millions of daily commuters in Bengaluru. The integration of digital payments and smart cards will not only improve efficiency but also bring BMTC closer to a fully modernized public transportation system.

For Bengaluru residents who rely on buses for daily commuting, this new smart ticketing system could make travel simpler, faster, and more convenient than ever before.
